Many
people in the world are born with physical disabilities. Some of them
have very serious conditions. Living a normal life can be hard for
them. But there is a man who overcame his disability.
Now he has become a motivational speaker and
gives hope to people all over the world. His name is Sean Stephenson.
This week, let¡¯s meet Sean and learn a valuable life lesson from him!
Sean Stephenson was born with a genetic bone disorder in Chicago, America.
His condition is called osteogenesis imperfecta°ñÇü¼ººÎÀüÁõ. People with
this disease have very weak bones. Their bones break very easily. So they
can¡¯t have a normal life. They can¡¯t even run or enjoy sports.
When Sean was born, doctors said he wouldn¡¯t survive. But he managed to
survive. Last Tuesday, he turned 30 years old. He is
only 90 centimeters tall and weighs 20 kilograms. But
he is a little giant! He learned to overcome
his unhappiness. Now he thinks
his disability is a gift.
When
he was young, Sean was an unhappy child. By the time he was 18, his
bones had broken more than 200 times. He was
always sad and sick. But one day, his mother
asked him a question and it changed his life forever. The question was:
¡°Is this going to be a gift or a burden?¡± Little Sean decided to make his life
a gift.
Sean said he could overcome his hardship thanks to his parents. They
made him focus on what he can do and
dismiss what he cannot. They
helped Sean build inner strength. ¡°We tried
to instill a lot of positive things in his life
and he took it,¡± his father said.
Now as an adult, he is living a busy life, helping many people.
So far, he has written two
self-help books. In April,
he filmed a TV documentary. Recently, he opened orphanages for kids with
disabilities.
He is also
operating a summer camp to help children
build a healthy self image. These days, Sean
is helping people solve their emotional problems.
His life is still not easy. He has to travel in a child seat in
cars. He needs a stick to press elevator buttons. He usually needs other people¡¯s
help. But he is living a happy life. ¡°I love my life,¡± said
Sean. ¡°Being 90 centimeters tall and in a wheelchair is about 2 percent
of who I am. I¡¯m more than able. I¡¯m playing large!¡±
he said with a big smile. |
