From November 7 to 11, the 10th PISAF (Puchon International Student Animation Festival)ºÎõ±¹Á¦Çлý¾Ö´Ï¸ÞÀ̼ÇÆ佺Ƽ¹ú was held at Boksagol Culture Centerº¹»ç°ñ¹®È¼¾ÅÍ. A large number of students from all around the world participated in the festival and showed off their own creations. There were also various workshops where visitors could learn more about animation.

On November 10, The Kids Times and 4 kid reporters visited Boksagol Culture Center and participated in one of the workshops which was led by Michel Ocelot, a world-famous French animation artist. He is also known as the ¡°Magician of Light.¡± He has produced numerous great animated films, gaining great popularity with works such as Prince & Princess, Azur & Asmar and Kirikou & The Sorceress.

While our Kids reporters were waiting in a classroom, a gentleman in a colorful shirt entered with big smile on his face. It was Michel Ocelot! During the 2-hour class, he led us through the fantastic and magical world of animation. With a sheet of paper and a pencil, he showed us a simple but interesting animation production technique. The Kids reporters folded and cut papers following Michel Ocelot¡¯s instructions. Then, we drew a bird with its wings up. On the other side of the paper, we drew the same bird with its wings down. Then, we rolled the paper around a pencil and tried to flip it fast! Wow! It looked like the birds we drew were flapping. It was really fun!

After the class, we learned more about animation while having a pleasant talk with Mr. Ocelot. He showed us the paper dolls that were actually used in the film Prince & Princess.
He even showed us how to make sound effects for animated films.

Mr. Ocelot said he had loved drawing since he was young, and one day he decided to become a director of animated films. ¡°I am happy because I am doing what I like to do,¡± he said. ¡°You should also try to find what you truly like.¡±

The time we spent with him went really fast. The meeting with Mr. Ocelot was a memorable time for all of us. Here¡¯s what our four Kids reporters have to say about their special experience.

Park Yeong-yo (Seoul Doseong Elementary School, 6th Grade)
Before I meet Michel Ocelot, I watched some of his works such as Azur and Asmar and Prince and Princess, and I liked them very much! I¡¯m just glad I had a chance to actually meet him. I really had a great time. I will remember what he said to us: ¡°Finding what you want is the most important thing. When you find what you really want to do, do it. And do things that can help you to do the thing you want.¡± Well, I want to be a scientist when I grow up. So I guess I¡¯ll have to study science harder!

Kim Hyeon-min (Incheon Elunji Elementary School, 4th Grade)
I was very happy to meet Michel Ocelot. He taught us how to move characters in animated films. It was very interesting. However, I was sad because time flew so fast! I think silhouette animation is really amazing. Silhouette animation is made using black shadows of paper dolls. I think it is the best animation I¡¯ve ever seen! As Mr. Ocelot said, I want to enjoy doing my favorite thing.

Choe Yeong-joon (Kwanmoon Elementary School, 6th Grade)
When I first saw Mr. Ocelot, I was very impressed. He was wearing a sweater with red, yellow, and blue colors and he looked very happy. Following his direction, we made our own animation. We made our own birds that looked like they were flying and moving their wings! After making this short animation, we took pictures with him. We also got his autograph. It was really great to be with him!

Kim Seong-ha (Seoul Daegok Elementary School, 4th Grade)
Michel Ocelot was born in France and he is now 65 years old. He has loved animation since he was young. So he decided to become an animation producer. So far, he has created countless animated films. He said that we should enjoy what we are doing. He looked very happy because he loves his job very much. I guess he won¡¯t get tired of his job! It was a great pleasure to meet him. Like he said, I will try to truly enjoy and love what I do!
