On
May 23, the 16th President of Korea, Roh Moo-hyun passed away. He
was 63 years old. The whole country was saddened by his sudden death. Countless people expressed
their sorrow at his death. Many world leaders
also expressed their condolences. His funeral service was held
last Friday in Seoul. Now he is resting in peace at Bongha Village,
his hometown.
Roh Moo-hyun was born on August 6, 1946 at Bongha Village in Gimhae,
Gyeongsangnam-do. Born to a poor farming family, he never attended university. But
he decided to become a lawyer to protect human rights. ¡°I want to
become a man who can make a difference in the
world,¡± Roh once said. He studied hard by himself to pass the bar exam. In 1975, he became
a human rights lawyer.
In 1988, he entered politics. He worked hard for human rights. He
also tried to overcome regionalism in Korean politics.
In 2003, he became the 16th president. He worked hard for Korea for
5 years. He tried to make Korea a better country for ordinary people. He was called
the ¡°common people¡¯s president.¡±
He was famous for his humble, friendly manners.
After finishing
his term of office, Roh returned to his hometown, Bongha Village
in 2008. He wanted to live a peaceful life there with
his family. He was warmly welcomed by the villagers. He enjoyed reading
books and mountain hiking. He also spent a lot of time with his grandchildren. Many people
missed the former president and visited
the town to meet him. He also shared his ordinary life
with many people through his website.
However, last month, Roh became the center of a bribery scandal. The scandal
stained his moral image. He was suffering
from a bad conscience. His family said
he didn¡¯t eat or sleep well. On May 23, early in the morning, he died
by jumping from a mountain cliff after leaving
a note for his family. He wrote in his note: ¡°Don¡¯t feel too sad.
Both life and death are part of nature. Don¡¯t feel sorry.
Don¡¯t blame anyone. It¡¯s destiny.¡±
The whole world was shocked and saddened by his
death. So many people visited his hometown to pray for him. After holding
a funeral on May 29, he is now resting in peace in his hometown. Former
President Roh Moo-hyun will be remembered as common people¡¯s
president forever. We respectfully express our
sincere condolences. Rest in peace, President! |
