Smiling Night Sky    [13-12-2008]

Do you think the sky can smile? Yes, it can! Just take a close look at the pictures. You can see a smiling face very clearly, and it¡¯s real! Last Monday, Venus and Jupiter were in formation with the moon to appear as a smiley face in the night sky in Australia.
The two planets looked like eyes and the moon looked like a smiling mouth. Australians were amazed to see the unusual astronomical phenomenon. It continued for 3 hours from 8 pm to 11 pm. The special event was close enough to see with the naked eye from about 9 pm. People in Western Australia have the best view.
Venus and Jupiter had appeared side by side in the evening sky over the past week or so in Australia. However, last Monday night was the best night to see the smiley face appear. While the planets and moon appear to be close together, in reality, they are not. The moon is 250,000 miles away, while Venus is 93 million miles away and Jupiter 540 million miles away. We have to wait another 5 years to see the spectacular scene again. But wouldn¡¯t it be wonderful if we could see the friendly smile in the sky every day?
