The year 2009 is only a few days away. Each country celebrates the beginning of a new year differently. This week, let¡¯s
learn about New Year¡¯s Day customs in Europe! Next week,

New Year¡¯s in Italy
New Year¡¯s
Day is a special time in Italy. People in Italy celebrate the day
with their family. They eat delicious foods together
and watch fireworks on New Year¡¯s Eve.
The traditional New Year foods
are mainly fish such as smoked salmon and tuna. Before the main fish course, they eat
pasta. Seafood salad is the most
common New Year food in the
country. Fireworks start around midnight on New Year¡¯s Eve,
filling the night sky with
beautiful colors. Active and friendly people in Rome come
together and celebrate the beginning of the New Year with strangers on the streets
on New Year¡¯s Eve.

Year¡¯s in Germany
In Germany, the New Year is celebrated noisily and merrily. They host exciting
parties on New Year¡¯s Eve. They eat, drink, dance and sing with their
family and friends. They leave a bit of every food eaten
on New Year¡¯s Eve on their plate until after midnight as a way of ensuring a well-stocked larder. As the clock strikes midnight, they say
good-bye to the old year and welcome in the New Year. Bells resound all over the land,
fireworks fill the sky and people wish each other a Happy New
Year!

New Year celebrations in Spain are very unique. On New Year¡¯s Eve,
the Spanish enjoy a nice dinner with
friends and family. They like to be around their TV sets as the countdown is telecasted live
all over the country. As the clock strikes midnight, the Spanish eat 12 grapes one
by one to bring good luck to the 12
months of the New Year. The center of the New Year celebrations is
the ringing of the bells at midnight.
Thousands of people get together on New Year¡¯s Eve at the clock square in Madrid to ring
the bell.

England gets into the New Year excitement starting New Year¡¯s
Eve. The fun kicks off with a beautiful fireworks display lighting up the sky. Fireworks
are the most awaited celebration of New
Year¡¯s Eve in London. Thousands gather in Trafalgar Square in the heart of London to
hear the countdown to midnight. There are also many parties, music
concerts and many other fun activities on New Year¡¯s Day. |
