are many amazing and brave teens in the world.
An American girl named Bethany Hamilton is one of them. She is 18
years old and lives in Hawaii. She loves surfing just like many other
Hawaiian teens. So, what’s so special about her?
She came in second in the World Junior Women’s Surfing Championships held in Sydney,
Australia, on January 5. Even though she didn’t come in first, she received
high praise from people. Why? Surprisingly, she has only
one arm! Bethany lost her left arm 5 years ago to a 4-meter shark
while she was surfing in Hawaii.
Her dream was to become a professional surfer. People
thought she would give up her dream after losing
her arm. They thought it would be impossible to surf with only
one arm. However, the brave girl didn’t give up. In fact, three weeks after
the attack, Bethany was back
on her surf board!
She said she will do her best to win the championship next year. Good
