How Many Stars Are There in the Sky?    [31-01-2009]

Almost every night, we can see many beautiful stars in the sky. So many stars twinkle in the night sky on clear days. But do you know how many stars there are in the sky? This is a very good question, isn¡¯t it? Well, it is easy to ask this question, but difficult for scientists to give an exact answer!

In fact, there are too many stars for scientists to actually count one by one. Stars are gathered together into huge groups known as galaxies. The Sun belongs to a galaxy called the Milky Way. Some scientists say that there are about 100 billion stars in the Milky Way alone. Outside the Milky Way, there are millions of other galaxies! So no one really knows the exact number of stars in the universe.

It has been said that counting the stars in the sky is like trying to count the number of sand grains on a beach on Earth. Just take a look into the sky on a clear night, and you will see a few thousand stars with your naked eyes.
If you look through a telescope, you will find many more stars. This is because the telescope will help you see more stars that you couldn¡¯t see with your naked eye. If you get an even bigger telescope, you will be able to see even more stars! Why don¡¯t you try to count stars tonight?
