How
the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham,
Oh, the Places You'll Go!... Have you read one of these books? If
you have, do you know who wrote them? These books were written by
Dr. Seuss. He is the beloved American author and illustrator of children's
books. He wrote more than 46 books for children. His books are famous
for their blend of fun humor and unique illustrations. This
week, let's meet Dr. Seuss!
Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904 in Massachusetts, U.S. His birth
name was Theodor Seuss Geisel. Dr. Seuss is his pen name. He used to say
that "I like nonsense; it wakes up the brain cells." Like his quote says, Dr. Seuss seemed
like a very nonsensical kind of man.
His books have made a lasting impression on many people
since he began publishing them in 1937.
At the time of his death in 1991, his 46 children's books had sold
more than 200 million copies. And his last book Oh, the Places You'll
Go! (1990) was still on the bestseller lists. His books have been
translated into 20 languages! But how did he start writing? And where
did he get his ideas?
As a young man, he worked for an oil company. There, he wrote ads
that consisted of cartoon drawings of people. This began his love
for writing and drawing. In 1937, Dr. Seuss published his first book
To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. He used the name Dr. Seuss.
This was because he wanted to use his real name for more serious books.
Seuss was his middle name, and he put Dr. in front of it. Why? His
father always wanted him to be a doctor!
One
day in 1954, Dr. Seuss read an article that said American
children were having trouble learning how to read in schools.
According to the article,
it was because children found the books boring. So, Dr. Seuss decided
to write fun books for children. He wanted to help them read books
easily. He took a list of 250 words that schools were teaching kids.
Then, he incorporated all of them
into one book called The Cat in the Hat. Children loved this book
very much! In 1960, Dr. Seuss wrote a book called Green Eggs and Ham.
Surprisingly, he used only
50 words in the book!
In total, Dr. Seuss has written and illustrated 47 children's books.
Also, he has won the Pulitzer Prize and 3 Academy Awards. Dr. Seuss
passed away on September 24, 1991, at the age of 87. However, his
books are still enjoyed by children and adults alike all over the world! |
