Phew! It's really hot these days. Yes, the hot summer is finally here. Of course summer is an exciting season. We can play in the water, go camping and eat all kinds of tasty fruits. But there's one thing that bugs me every summer. Mosquitoes! I hate it when those annoying insects bite me every time I go outside. How much do you know about mosquitoes? Do you know why they love to bite you? This week, let's learn about these bugs that we would love to get rid of!

Male Mosquitoes Don't Bite Humans
You know that there are many different races living in this world, right? Well, it's the same with mosquitoes. There are thousands of different kinds of mosquitoes in many different sizes and colors. What's interesting is that only female mosquitoes bite humans. This is because they need the energy to lay eggs and make many more baby mosquitoes. I know this is a little scary. Our blood is female mosquitoes' favorite drink! The reason why mosquito bites itch so much is because of their saliva. When a female mosquito sucks the blood from your skin, her saliva enters your body. It's the saliva that makes a pink or red bump around the bitten area.

Stop Scratching!
when we get bit by a mosquito, we scratch the area again and again. This is not good. It will make the bump get bigger and bigger. And the area will get itchier and itchier. First, you should wash the bite with soap and water. Next, put some lotion to lower the itching. You can also put an ice pack on the bite to cool down the itching.

Want to Stop Mosquitoes from Biting You?
If you don't want mosquitoes to bite you, the best way is to wear an insect repellent. Repellents with the lemon scent seem to work best. Usually these repellents come in a spray can. And if you accidentally spray it in your eyes, it can really sting. So, make sure you always ask your parents to spray it on you. Mosquitoes love flying around during night time. If you don't want to go to sleep smelling like a bug repellent, there's a solution. Before you go to bed, plug in an electric repellent. It doesn't smell, and it will keep the bloody bugs from coming near your bed.

Let's Fight the Bad Mosquitoes!
Did you know that mosquitoes lay their eggs in water? If there are wet buckets in your balcony or the front yard, make sure they are dry! Mosquitoes can lay their eggs in wet flower pots, cups or anything that can collect water. Making sure your home dry is the first step in fighting mosquitoes. Why? Mosquitoes cannot lay their eggs in a dry place! Summer time isn't always filled with sunshine. There will be rainy days. And this means many female mosquitoes will get a chance to lay eggs! Remind your parents to keep your home dry!

Mosquitoes Are Very Dangerous!
Did you know that some mosquitoes can actually kill a large animal? I know this is hard to believe. But certain mosquitoes carry deadly viruses which can kill a large animal like a horse! Yeah, I know you think a small bug can't really hurt you. But you are wrong. It's always good to be safe. If you see an allergic reaction and feel dizzy or sick, tell your parents right away. A doctor will examine you and give you the medicines to make you feel better.
