 Recently,
there was a presidential election in
Afghanistan. This year’s president is actually the same one from
2004. Can you guess who it is? His name
is Hamid Karzai. Most of you may not be familiar with his name.
But he is a very popular politician in the Middle East.
President Karzai was born in a small village called Karz in Afghanistan.
He was born on Christmas Eve in 1957. As a young kid, he was interested
in politics. His father and
grandfather were both politicians. He had a dream of becoming a great
politician. He went to the famous Himachal Pradesh University
in India. He studied political science. As soon as he graduated, he started to
work in politics.
In the early years of his career, he had many troubles. Afghanistan was
a country often attacked by the ex-Soviet
Union. Furthermore, it is a country
once controlled by a terrorist group called the
Taliban. Countless people lived in
poverty and the country was
often at war. Hamid Karzai wanted
to create peace for his people. Sadly, his ideas were not accepted by many. His father
was even assassinated. At times, Karzai had to be
in exile.
 However,
no hardships could stop Karzai
from wanting to make a better nation. In 2002, he successfully pushed
out the Taliban from his country. In 2004, he became the first democratically-elected leader
of Afghanistan. He worked hard to remove poverty. And he met
up with many groups and nations to bring peace.
Now, his country is improving, and it’s much safer. All his hard work
paid off this year. Once again, Afghanistan chose Hamid Karzai to
be the president. He won more than 50% of the votes. Congratulations! |
