What Causes an Ice Age?   [01-09-2026]
What Causes an Ice Age?0Scientists still do not fully understand what causes ice ages, but they have several ideas. One leading explanation involves changes in Earth’s orbit and the tilt of its axis. These changes, called Milankovitch cycles, can affect how much sunlight reaches the Northern Hemisphere. When summers become cooler, less winter snow and ice melt. Over many years, leftover snow can accumulate, forming huge ice sheets.
Other factors may also play a role, including the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates and changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Together, these changes may help explain why Earth sometimes enters an ice age.
