Shin Jin-seo Defeats Top Go AI KataGo   [01-09-2026]
Shin Jin-seo Defeats Top Go AI KataGo0World No. 1 Go grandmaster Shin Jin-seo achieved a historic victory against KataGo, the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence Go engine, winning their three-game exhibition series 2-1 at the Ssen Math-Hankyung Gisin Cup in Seoul.

The match marked the 10th anniversary of Lee Se-dol’s landmark 2016 series against AlphaGo.

Played with a two-stone handicap to reduce AI’s computational advantage, the showdown began with Shin losing the opening game.

The 26-year-old South Korean star then bounced back with two straight victories.

In the decisive final game, Shin used a calm, defensive strategy focused on controlling territory.

He defeated KataGo by 11.5 points after 221 moves.

Shin became the first human player to win an official series against KataGo under handicap conditions.

After the victory, he said the result showed that human creativity and flexible thinking remain powerful in the AI era.

Rather than attempting to imitate machine perfection, Shin emphasized the value of developing an authentic playing style and using human intuition to discover new possibilities alongside AI technology.
